Bank Holidays vs Stock Market Holidays: Why the Fed and NYSE Differ

The differences, explained
- Good Friday: NYSE closed (exchange tradition, not a federal holiday); the Fed is open and ACH settles.
- Columbus Day and Veterans Day: the Fed is closed; the NYSE trades. Trades still settle T+1, but cash can't move through Fedwire that day.
- Saturday holidays: NYSE closes the preceding Friday; the Fed stays open.
- Ad-hoc closures: the NYSE closes for national days of mourning (e.g. 9 January 2025); the Fed generally stays open.
